1. Appearance Observation
Genuine chrome-plated rods: The surface has a uniform, silvery-white mirror-like luster, strong reflectivity, and is free of bubbles, scratches, or color differences.
Counterfeit chrome-plated rods: May have a darker or reddish color (imitation gold plating) or obvious defects (such as pitting or pinholes).
2. Hardness Test
The surface hardness of a genuine chrome-plated rod can reach HRC 55-62 (high-frequency hardening treatment), while ordinary chrome-plated rods are approximately HRC 20-30.
Counterfeit products have lower hardness and are easily scratched or worn.
3. Plating Thickness Measurement
Using an X-ray fluorescence thickness gauge (XRF), the thickness of a genuine chrome plating layer is usually 0.8-3μm, and the nickel layer is 5-10μm.
Counterfeit products may have a plating layer that is too thin (e.g., only 0.3μm) or insufficient nickel plating.
4. Material Identification
Base material: Genuine chrome-plated rods are mostly made of 45# steel or 40Cr steel, which can be identified by the spark test method (40Cr contains chromium and has more spark nodes) or by a spectrometer.
Counterfeit products may use inferior carbon steel or stainless steel as a substitute.
5. Chemical Test
Wipe the surface with hydrochloric acid; a genuine chrome plating layer will not react. If the base material is exposed (such as copper or iron), it is a counterfeit product.
Professional institutions can further verify through component analysis (such as chromium element detection).
6. Markings and Certificates
Genuine products will be marked with the material (e.g., "45# chrome-plated"), tolerance grade (e.g., h7), and production standards.
Counterfeit products may have no markings or unclear information.
